More About 'From Rome to Babylon'

About a film so wide-ranging in its scope as this one it is only possible to say a few words of introduction. It is a film about the origins of Power more than anything else, the power that derives from locations and the power that this communicates to the men and women who live in these places. What is it that made Babylon so great, legendary even - its architectural power? Yes, that suggests one line of investigation of this film, though there are many other locations in which itj ourneys to consider the same thesis. What of the architecture built during Mussolini's and Hitler's reign in their two countries, Italy and Germany respectively. Are not the "Centrale" station in Milan and the "Rally Land" in Nürnberg examples of trying to overwhelm the people with the sheer size and solidity of the buildings around them? The filmjourneys to these places and others in the course of these investigations, though it is about far more than just the power of architecture, it is about the obsession with the past, and with certain periods of the past in particular, above all the Greco-Roman period and the days of long-fallen Babylon. How often do the buildings and stories of these two different areas inspire men and women to build anew and try to regain the power of those cultures. However, the emphasis of the film is not only upon those who led countries and assigned architects to transform the external look of their countries, but on ordinary people who live among monumental architecture, the effects that it has on their lives and their attitudes towards the origins of these buildings and whether or not they should be knocked down. For example, in Berlin the "Stadium" is still a location of shame because of the Olympic Games that Germany hosted there under Adolf Hitler's rule. This film is of a bi-partite structure, although if you look at it in more depth it breaks down into four separate sections, a succession of stages that follows the travelling of the film- makers through Europe so as to visit the locations and film the footage that makes up the film.
The Four separate sections are:

I. The New Rome - the fascination of the
dictators with "Rome"

II. Rome - the Architecture of this place
(as well as of Milan and Athens)

III. Babylon - difference of another power-spot
to Rome - power & régime

IV. The New Babylon - Saddam Hussein's obsessed
plan to create New Babylon
